Copy of Essex Community Messaging Message re Sexting

24/04/2016

Do you know what your children are sending over the internet?

Please talk to your children and outline the dangers of sending naked or underwear images. It may be your child only believes they are sharing with a boyfriend or girlfriend. But what happens to that image if they split up? Is it shared with others around the school or posted on the internet for anyone to see?

Imagine the embarrassment.

Will this get your child a bad name or even bullied?

Will the image fall into the wrong hands?

It may be common but 'sexting' is illegal. By sending an explicit image, a young person is producing and distributing child abuse images and risks being prosecuted, even if the picture is taken and shared with their permission. They could even end up on the sex offenders register.
